Virborough

Virborough is a cyberpunk city designed as a 3D destination hub for exploring places across Overte. Its districts combine virtual destinations, attractions, and subway connections into an immersive directory, while its changing weather and day-night cycle bring the city to life. Virborough also preserves traces of past virtual-world projects as a small commemorative archive.

Virborough was conceived as a 3D destination directory: a place where visitors can explore a cyberpunk city and choose their next destination from among the places available in Overte.

The city is divided into nine districts, with the ground level designed as a collection of storefronts presenting published destinations. The layout is intended to concentrate places available through Overte's Place system into a single, visually engaging hub—something like a small red-light district of virtual destinations.

Each district is centered around a specific attraction located at a street or avenue intersection, giving every area its own identity. The city also features subway entrances that connect visitors directly to specific destinations, making the subway system another way to navigate the directory and turning Virborough into a functional transportation hub.

Virborough is built around the Place API provided by Overte's directory service. Its environment includes a day-and-night cycle, with a 19-hour day deliberately chosen so that the cycle does not remain synchronized with the real world. The city also features occasional rain events to add atmosphere and variation to the environment.

Each district can display up to 28 destinations. At the current stage, only the first three districts have dedicated installations:

Inception Place (Central district) — featuring the Foundation Monument
Cafe Parapluie — a dedicated café installation
Tivoli Square Park — a public park and gathering area

The remaining districts were intentionally left open for future development as the Overte community and the number of available destinations grow.

Virborough also serves as a commemorative space. Among its storefronts and city elements are references to brands and projects from earlier virtual-world initiatives—projects that have since been abandoned or are no longer present. In this way, the city is not only a directory and transportation hub, but also a small archive of Overte's evolving history.
